We’ll be bringing you interviews over the next few weeks with some of the talented artists who won the major prizes in our Marvel/Avengers design contest! First up is Antony Rozwadowski, whose “Assemble” took home the big kahuna! Here are some insights to his work and designing for tees from the grand prize winner:

Hi Antony! Tell our WeLoveFine.com community a little about yourself – where are you from, how long have you been a designer, etc.

I am originally from Wisconsin, went to college in New York (RIT, Rochester Institute of Technology) and now live in a cool little town (Culpeper) in Virginia.
I am married to a graphic designer (Kelly) and have two incredible kids (Cole 8, Joy 5). I work at K Art and Design, Inc., a graphic design studio that my wife founded 11 years ago. I’ve been designing logos, websites and everything in-between for K Art for the past 7 years and been in the graphic design field for 16.
I’m just a kid at heart, a product of the 80′s and 90′s and will grow up eventually. I’m a huge fan of cartoons, superheroes, comics, toys and pop culture in general. I love sharing what I grew up with and my current interests with my kids, everything from Superfriends and Thundercats to Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Avatar the Last Airbender. I’m also a huge sports nut, rooting for all of my home state Wisconsin teams (Go Packers!).

Is drawing something you’ve always been interested in? And are your awesome skills self-taught or did you study design?

I was drawing superheroes as early as kindergarten for friends of mine. I had both Superfriends and Marvel Comics lunch boxes that I used to copy the characters off of. I’ve always enjoyed art classes and kept myself busy with creative projects of my own like paper Transformers.
It was in my Junior year of high school that I decided I had enough of math classes and wanted to pursue a career in art. I attended RIT in Rochester, NY and graduated with degrees in graphic design and illustration.

As your style developed, who did you look to for influences and inspiration?

I’ve always been a big fan of art from the Art Deco era, kitsch from 50′s and 60′s culture, Atomic Age design, music poster/cd art and Pop Art. Artists and visionaries like Jim Henson, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Bruce Timm, Alex Ross just to name a few. I love logos, especially sports logos and sports branding. I tend to blend a lot of my interests and styles into my work depending on what a project calls for.
I like to sneak some kind of illustration component into my graphic design projects when I can. You can see some of my comic book tendencies when I deal with figures or motion in logos.

When you sat down to design for the Avengers contest, how did you come to the design you eventually ended up submitting?

I went into the Avengers contest with one goal, to make a bold iconic looking self contained design. I approached it like a logo project. I wanted to create a message in the most compact way possible and that’s when I thought of using the characters to form the Avengers “A” logo. What better way to play on the word “assemble”. I had to run it by you guys first to make sure I wasn’t breaking the rules
I wanted to keep it simple and very graphic with a retro feel to it, thus the old school costumes, muted colors, and lots of geometry (angles and lining up elements).

Describe an element of “Assemble” that you are really pleased with how it turned out.

I was very happy that I could capture the personalities of each character through the poses that make up the “A” logo with a minimum amount of detail. It came out just like I imagined it in my head.

In your opinion, what design elements are best to keep in mind when you are working on a piece of art for a t-shirt, hoodie or other apparel?

I’m a fan of very graphic t-shirts. I translate and create a lot of artwork for a local screen printer, a lot of one and two color jobs. I think the most effective designs are the simplest ones. If you can get your message across quickly in an illustration/design for apparel you have succeeded. Then you can go back in and look for all of the details.

Are there any styles of art that you haven’t really worked in before that you would like to try your hand at in the future?

There are a lot of styles out there that I haven’t tried, Nouveau being one of them.

What are some of your other favorite pop culture characters to draw, either other Marvel characters or entirely other properties?

I’m really excited about the Avengers movie so the contest hooked me right away. I love both DC and Marvel properties and doodle when I can.
I didn’t have enough time to enter The Muppets contest but I’m a huge fan of Jim Henson’s work. I enjoy drawing a lot of characters I grew up with like Superfriends, He-man, Thundercats, Transformers and I try to introduce my kids to the old versions as well as the new reboots. My son Cole and I will draw our own Pokemon characters or create animal hybrids like on Avatar or Legend of Korra, too.
